NURSE EXTERN PROGRAM
The Nurse Extern Program Hardin Memorial Hospital offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for senior-level nursing students to apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to the real-world practice of nursing. A Nurse Extern Program is a structured program that provides an opportunity for a nursing student in good standing at his/her college, to participate in an “apprentice-like” experience in a clinical setting. The program supports nursing students in their efforts to:
- Strengthen their assessment and clinical skills
- Develop their communication and critical thinking skills
- Expand their knowledge of the professional nurse's role as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Build confidence in applying the skills they have learned in the academic environment
Studies have found that student nurse externships support nurse recruitment and retention efforts, as well as expediting the student’s clinical skills acquisition, and easing the transition to professional practice for the new graduate. Offering student nurses an externship experience increases the likelihood that they will choose our organization as their first employer after graduation. Further, offering a student nurse externship provides a unique opportunity for our experienced nursing staff to mentor newcomers to the nursing profession, and share their wisdom and experience.
