The Sleep Center at Hardin Memorial Hospital specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related disorders in children and adults. The center is staffed by sleep experts who will help identify the cause of sleeplessness and determine the most effective treatment options available. The trained specialists at Hardin Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center evaluate test results and provide a diagnosis. Once a sleep disorder is diagnosed, there are many forms of treatment to be considered. Options range from weight loss, behavior modification, noninvasive positive airway pressure (CPAP/BIPAP), medication, or surgery for more severe respiratory problems.
A staff physician discusses treatment recommendations with the patient’s primary care physician to develop a customized program for long-term care.
Sleep testing is performed during the patient’s normal sleeping hours. The sleeping suites are designed to create a quiet, relaxed atmosphere including a private restroom. Showers are also available. Each suite is outfitted with sophisticated equipment to monitor sleep stages, breathing patterns, heart activity, body movements and more. Once the data has been analyzed, a written evaluation is sent to the patient’s primary physician. Further testing and evaluation may also be recommended.

frequently? Insomnia is the term for having difficulty falling or
staying asleep. In many cases, it can be relieved with a few simple
behavioral changes or medication. Let your doctor know if you have any
of the following symptoms:
- Waking up several times throughout the night
- Waking up early in the morning
- Significant trouble getting out of bed in the morning
- Excessive sleepiness during the day
- History of falling asleep during the day at inappropriate times
- Pain, frequent urination, or unusual sensations that keep you awake
- Nightmares or disturbing thoughts that keep you awake

You can take steps to sleep better at night. These tips can help:
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, if possible.
- Avoid performing activities such as eating and working in your bed.
- Avoid strenuous activity two hours prior to going to bed.

insomnia from drinking very sweet beverages or alcohol.
- Avoid eating heavy meals at least two hours prior to going to sleep.
Perhaps it is not food or activity that keeps you from falling asleep.
Some people may have trouble sleeping because they worry too much. One
method for preventing worries from keeping you awake is to write in a
journal before going to bed. List all the issues that worry you. By
journaling, you transfer your worries from your thoughts to paper,
leaving your mind quieter and more ready to fall asleep. Ask your doctor
if he or she can recommend similarly helpful strategies for dealing
with what is keeping you up.
