Federal Government Rankings Show HMH Among The Best in State, Country – Hospital Receives 4-Star Quality Rating

Hardin Memorial Hospital ranks in the top 25 percent of hospitals nationwide according to a new quality rating recently released from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  Of the 4,599 hospitals rated, only 2.2 percent earned five stars and 20.3 percent garnered four stars, putting HMH in the top quartile of best performing hospitals in the country.

Of the 82 hospitals rated in Kentucky, only 16 earned four stars and none received five stars. There were only 102 hospitals across the nation that received a five-star rating.

This is the first time CMS has released the rankings based on 64 quality measures in seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.

HMH’s CEO Dennis Johnson said the ranking reflects the tremendous momentum the entire HMH healthcare system is experiencing.

“We’ve long known our hospital is providing care that is as high quality as any hospital in the country,” said Johnson.  “This ranking validates that. It speaks volumes about the quality and breadth of care our physicians, nurses and medical team provides.”

Dr. Jody Prather, HMH’s Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer, considers the CMS ranking the most comprehensive and unbiased of its kind and added that the quality measures CMS collects impact the hospital’s reimbursement rates.

“From our perspective, this is the most important ranking because CMS impacts HMH’s financial health,” said Prather.

According to CMS, the ranking data comes from the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program and the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting Program. CMS then uses what it calls a clustering algorithm to assign hospitals a one-to-five star rating.

Prather further explained that HMH collects and submits some survey information, but CMS collects a large portion through claims data.
