HMH volunteers donate time, effort to invest in the future of the region

Let Christmas Shine Blog 2Throughout the year, Hardin Memorial Health Auxiliary volunteers put in thousands of donated hours to work toward raising money for the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.

These scholarships are successful due to the determination, selflessness and hard work of HMH’s volunteers. Through various fundraisers, the Auxiliary is able to award $1,000 scholarships to students in HMH’s 10-county service area (Hardin, LaRue, Meade, Breckenridge, Grayson, Nelson, Hart, Bullitt, Green and Taylor) who are pursuing a career in healthcare.

Scholarships are funded through proceeds from the $5 Jewelry Sale, Books are Fun sales and Let Christmas Shine, the organization’s signature fundraiser, all of which are organized by HMH Auxiliary. The Auxiliary’s outstanding fundraising efforts were exemplified at the recent $5 Jewelry Sale. The Spring $5 Jewelry Sale made $4,472, which is over $1,000 more than the last sale.  This means that another local student will receive a scholarship.

In recent years, volunteers raised more money than ever and thus have been able to award more scholarships. In 2016 and 2017, the HMH Auxiliary provided 15 students with $1,000 scholarships and is on track to do so again.

While not a requirement, the hope is that the scholarship recipient will consider using their healthcare degree to work at HMH one day.

These scholarships, which are an investment both in our students’ futures as well as our region’s health, would not be possible without HMH Auxiliary volunteers.

More than 140 Auxiliary volunteers donate 36,000-plus hours annually.  If you are interested in volunteering with the HMH Auxiliary, please call Volunteer Services at (270) 706-1713.
