Phyllis Brandenburg began volunteering for the HMH Auxiliary in 1997 when a neighbor who volunteered there invited her.
“I’ve just enjoyed it so much I’ve continued to work there,” Brandenburg said. “Although I shouldn’t really call it work, because it’s fun and enjoyable.”
Phyllis works in the HMH Auxiliary Gift Shop, where all the proceeds are returned to the hospital for needed items and projects.
“I enjoy the people I work with and seeing the people who come in to the Gift Shop,” she said.
Phyllis’ nomination stated that Phyllis has given “twenty years of dedication to HMH and the Gift Shop. She is always happy and smiling and very positive and always treats everyone with a warmness that is contagious.”
Before she retired, Phyllis was a teacher at Elizabethtown Community College teaching secretarial courses and she says one of the joys of volunteering at HMH is that she gets to see many of her former students.
“I also enjoy meeting new people and I know the hospital is so important and that volunteering is a help,” she said. “I feel like what I do is a service that’s needed and that makes me feel like I’m doing a little good for the community.”
