Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the general medical care of hospitalized patients. They typically have limited or no outpatient responsibilities as to solely devote their time and attention to patients admitted to the hospital. When patients are admitted, the hospitalist takes responsibility for their care for the entirety of the patients’ stays.
Hospitalists work closely with the patient’s primary provider throughout the hospital stay to ensure seamless care after discharge. Following discharge, patient care transitions back to the primary provider.
